Introduction

Rapid economic development and urbanisation in the Asia-Pacific Region during the past two decades have led to the building of tens of densely-populated cities. The formation of a critical mass for an environmental protection industry is rapidly taking place in these mega-cities. It is envisaged that an environmental centre should be established in time to develop environmental technologies and management skills to meet the local, and eventually the regional demand.

The Research Centre for Urban Environmental Technology and Management is designed to integrate and further develop the existing strengths in environmental engineering and management in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering into a leading centre of excellence in the region with three strategic objectives as follows:

a)      To carry out application-oriented research to develop pollution abatement and management technologies that are appropriate for densely-populated cities such as Hong Kong and other major cities in Asia.

b)      To transfer the developed technologies and knowhows including appropriate management techniques to local and regional users through provision of specialist consultancy services, and training of engineers and other personnel who will serve the growing environmental industry with pragmatic solutions to environmental problems.

 c)   To educate environmental engineers and other professionals by providing continuing professional development courses for life-long learning and problem solving through interdisciplinary partnership.

The aspiration of this Centre is to establish and eventually develop into a regionally reputable centre for environmental research and education. It is anticipated that in the longer term, upon reaching maturity, technologies and management skills developed in-house will form a cornerstone in establishing a comprehensive and internationally reputable environmental technology and management institute.
