Indoor Air Quality Assessment and Control

A. Summary of activities

The Indoor Air Group has successfully completed several indoor air quality consultancy projects for Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (CPA) both in aircraft environment and office buildings at Chek Lap Kok. A Best Consultant Award has been given for the contribution to the CPA's indoor air quality in 1997. In 1999, The Indoor Air Group also completed a consultancy project for Ming Pao Newspaper Ltd. to investigate the indoor air quality at shopping malls, offices, classrooms, and residential flats in Hong Kong. The Group is equipped with most advanced indoor air quality sampling and analysis systems such as canister sampling system with Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometer. An indoor air emission chamber has been built for the study of various emissions (volatile organic compounds, ozone, particulate, etc) from building materials and office equipment in HK.

The Government recognised the existence of potential health risk and problems associated with indoor air pollution as spelt out in the White Paper on Pollution in 1993. A consultancy study on Indoor Air Pollution in Offices and Public Places was commissioned in 1995. The study was to characterize and quantify the indoor air pollution in office premises and selected public places in Hong Kong, assess the causes of the pollution problems, and recommend the most suitable control strategy. The Hong Kong Government's initiative to improve IAQ in Hong Kong premises will be taken forward by a special Management Group. The Indoor Air Group has established collaborative links with international academic community, including universities and institutes in Mainland China. The Group is developing indoor air emission characterization which is in line with the initiative of the United States Environmental Protection Agency on "Healthy Buildings, Healthy People - A version for the 21st century" for a more intensive promotion for the implementation of related indoor air quality regulations in HK.
