One half-day of the workshop will be devoted to presentations and discussions that focus specifically on cities. This part of the program, on the morning of the second day of the workshop, will contribute toward a more defined city perspective in the recommendations proposed by the individual sub-workshops.
It is expected that about six city presentations will be made in this section.
CAI-Asia and the Air Pollution in the Megacities of Asia (APMA) project will take the lead in the organization of this part of the program. To ensure a focused discussion, the following specific themes will guide the selection of presentations and the discussion in the workshop:
- Do cities know how polluted they are and it costs them?
- How can cities be empowered to tackle pollution in their own backyard?
- How can effective partnerships be forged between national and city levels?
- What are the innovative approaches at the city level in Asia and Pacific Rim areas?
Careful selection of presentations will be made to reflect diversity in the region in terms of geography and nature of air quality problems experienced. The emphasis will be on cities that have:
- demonstrated leadership
- institutionalized air quality measures
- produced clear improvements in air quality
The last part of the city focus session will be a moderated forum discussion in which a number of mayors and other senior decision makers at the city level will discuss their experiences in improving air quality management and to answer questions from workshop participants.
