Overview
The workshop format and program are designed to meet the following criteria:
- Overall format and program will encourage active participation by all participants
- Clear focus on the pollution that cities face, and the role cities can play in addressing air pollution without neglecting the overall policy and institutional context for air quality management in which cities are situated
- Presentations and discussions in the workshop will have to build on experiences and recommendations from earlier workshops and reports on air quality management and control in the region
- Experiences from outside the region are valuable as long as they are related to the regional context
Workshop Format
A. Opening Session -- The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, has been invited to officiate this workshop. Representatives from each of the co-organizing organizations will also be included in the opening session.
B. Keynote Addresses -- The keynote addresses will focus the attention of the participants on why it is important to deal with the problem of air pollution, to indicate size of the problem and the implications if no action is taken, the current status of air quality management, technologies and control in the region, and possible lessons that can be drawn from Asia and Pacific region in air quality management and control as well as applications of appropriate technologies.
C. Sub-workshops -- A substantial part of the overall workshop will be used to conduct six (6) sub-workshops to reflect the different interests of the different participants, and to create a smaller scale environment for better interaction.
D. City Focus -- One half-day of the workshop will be devoted to presentations and discussions that focus on specific cities. This part of the program, on the morning of the second day of the workshop, will contribute toward a more defined city perspective in the recommendations proposed by the individual sub-workshops.
E. Poster Sessions -- Presentors during these sessions will mount their papers on a poster for viewing by workshop participants. Presentors are expected to make themselves available for one hour and thirty minutes to answer questions from participants.
F. Exhibition -- Members of the private sector will exhibit specific technologies, products or services related to ambient air quality monitoring or to controlling pollution from mobile or stationary sources of pollution.
G. Workshop Closure -- In addition to the normal votes of thanks two special speakers are invited to deliver the closing address. This will be senior persons who have demonstrated keen interest in the issue of air quality management, either from a government organization within the Asian region or from a private sector body outside the region.
